Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the Big Sister Mentor?
A Big Sister Mentor is a supportive, relatable adult who offers young people a safe and comfortable space to talk. I’m not a therapist. My role is to listen, encourage, guide, and help children and teens feel more confident and supported as they navigate friendships, school, emotions, and growing up.
What ages do you work with?
I work with young people aged 11 - 18
Is this therapy or counselling?
No. These sessions are mentoring, not therapy or counselling. I do not diagnose, treat or provide mental health services. If I ever feel a young person may benefit from professional support, I will discuss this with you as the parent or guardian.
What topics can my child talk about?
Your child can talk about anything they feel comfortable sharing, including:
Confidence and self-esteem
Friendships and peer relationships
School stress, motivation, or organisation
Emotions and communication
Family relationships
Social media pressure
Growing up, identity, and life changes
Nothing is “too small." Sometimes simply having someone to talk to can make a big difference.
Are parents involved?
Parents are welcome to book a free introductory chat before sessions begin.
During ongoing mentoring:
young people have privacy to speak freely
parents can request general updates if it is appropriate
any safeguarding concerns are always shared directly with parents
This balance helps young people open up while ensuring parents remain informed where needed.
How do I know it’s helping?
Parents often notice:
increased confidence
improved communication
better handling of stress
more openness at home
a more positive attitude
How long are sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes long.
Most families choose:
Weekly sessions, or
Fortnightly sessions
The right frequency depends on your child’s needs, and this can always be adjusted.
Do you have a working with children's check?
Yes. I hold a current working with children's check.
What is the fee per session?
Sessions are $60 per 50 minute session.
What’s the cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations may be charged, except in genuine emergencies.
